International Centre for Synchrotron-Light for Experimental Science Applications in the Middle East

The Synchrotron -light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East ( SESAME ) is a synchrotron in Allaan, Jordan, which is established with the storage ring at the decommissioned BESSY project. It is the first synchrotron in the Middle East.

The SESAME project was initiated in the late 1990s, when it was clear that the German storage ring BESSY I 1999 should be reduced. Under the auspices of UNESCO, several countries came together from the Middle East and the Mediterranean to operate the storage ring after a technical upgrade (2.5 GeV, 133 m circumference) on. 2000 decided to use Jordan as a location, 2002 BESSY I was there shipped. The building was inaugurated on 3 November 2008. On 14 July 2009, an electron beam with the microtron was produced for the first time. The microtron is the last stage before the bullet acceleration of electrons in the actual synchrotron. Participating countries are Israel, Jordan, Turkey, Cyprus, Pakistan, Egypt and Iran.
