International Democratic Education Conference

The International Democratic Education Conference (short: IDEC ) is an annual international conference on Democratic Education. It is organized every year in a different country from a democratic school or organization in the field of Democratic Education.

Among the participants of the IDEC include staff and especially students of democratic schools, representatives of organizations, researchers, authors and other interested parties.

The aim of the IDEC is, firstly, Democratic schools to provide a forum in which they exchange with each other and can support each other in case of problems. Secondly, the IDEC to promote the idea of ​​democratic education and make known to the public.

On the IDEC 2002 in New Zealand following self-understanding was formulated:

In 2005, the participants in Berlin agreed on the following resolution:

  • Individually to decide what, how, where, when and with whom they learn,
  • To participate equally in decisions about how their organizations - in particular their schools - will be made ​​as to whether rules and sanctions are needed and if so what ".

History

In 1992, the Democratic School of Hadera in Israel educational prize of the President, who is regarded as the most prestigious prize in the field of education in Israel. Representatives of the Democratic School of Hadera and other democratic schools were then invited back in 1993 to Jerusalem at a conference entitled "Education for Democracy in a Multi -cultural Society ". The students and teachers of democratic schools were disappointed by this conference because they had almost no way to make a contribution to the conference. Therefore, they organized in the port in the Democratic School of Hadera own two-day conference. The participants found the conference so stimulating that they agreed on meeting each year.

1994 was held at that time still called the Hadera Conference meeting at the Sands School instead of in Ashburton, England.

In 1995, the students school in Vienna hosted the conference.

And in 1996, Hadera Conference held again in Hadera.

In 1997, the conference, which at that time about 50 people took part, was again held in the Sands School in England and largely organized by students. At this meeting the name " Hadera Conference " was changed to " International Democratic Education Conference ".

The 6th IDEC was in 1998 in the Stork Family School in Vinnitsa in the Ukraine. The 120 participants came from nine countries and representing 35 schools.

1999 IDEC was organized in the Summerhill School in England to support the then threatened with closure by the Ministry of Education school.

The IDEC 2000 in Tokyo was with about 1000 participants the largest ever. It was much more co-organized by students.

In 2001, the IDEC was to take place in Israel and Palestine. Due to the outbreak of the second intifada only a more regionally oriented meeting took place.

The IDEC 2002 was held in Christchurch, New Zealand in the Tamariki School.

2003 IDEC found the place for the first time in the USA. It was hosted by the Albany Free School and the Alternative Education Resource Organization in Troy, New York. It was attended by some 450 participants from 25 countries and 85 schools.

The IDEC 2004 was held in Bhubaneswar, India.

The IDEC took place in 2005 to 7 August 2005 at FEZ Berlin from July 30. It was inter alia on the Rights of the Child project KRÄ.TZÄ. and the School of Adult Education organized. There were 200 participants from 28 countries. To carry the idea of democratic schools in society, the conference on 4 and 5 August at the Humboldt University in Berlin was open to the public. More than 200 additional teachers, students, politicians, experts and journalists were able to hear presentations and engage in conversation with representatives of democratic schools.

In 2006, the Conference of the Australasian Association for Progressive and Alternative Education in Sydney was organized.

In 2007, the IDEC das Cruzes, Brazil took place from September 8 to 16 in Mogi instead.

The IDEC 2008 was held in Vancouver, Canada.

The IDEC 2009 to be held in South Korea, but was canceled at short notice due to the swine flu. Some international participants then met in small informal setting with the organizers.

The 18th IDEC was organized in April 2010 by the Institute for Democratic Education in Tel Aviv, Israel.

2011, the IDEC together with the EUDEC Conference as " IDEC @ EUDEC " at the River Dart Country Park, Devon, England instead. The conference was organized mainly by former students of the Sands School.

The IDEC 2012 was held from March 24 to 31, 2012 in Caguas, Puerto Rico instead.

Venue for the 2013 IDEC will be Boulder ( Colorado) in the USA.

2014 IDEC will be held in South Korea.

2008 saw the first one focused on Europe conference ( European Democratic Education Conference in short EUDEC ). It took place in Leipzig.
