The International Institute for the Sociology of Law ( IISL ) in Oñate in the Spanish Basque Country is the only international institution that focuses on the sociology of law in the broadest sense.

The IISL is a joint creation of the Research Committee on Sociology of Law ( International Sociological Association ) and the Basque Government. It was opened in the premises of the University in 1901 closed in 1989 by Oñate. The first Director of the IISL, André- Jean Arnaud left, bronze plaques with the names of some of the founding fathers and forerunners of the modern sociology of law attach to the walls of the Renaissance building: Montesquieu, Henry Sumner Maine, Francisco Giner de los Ríos, Achille Loria, Henri Lévy -Bruhl, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, Leon Petrażycki, Eugen Ehrlich, Karl Renner, Karl N. Llewellyn, Theodor Geiger, Georges Gurvitch, Nicholas S. Timasheff.

The Institute houses the most world's best library / documentation rather sociological literature. It organizes workshops on a variety of socio - legal topics, as well as an international master 's program for the Sociology of Law. Products resulting from the workshops publications are published as part of an English-speaking or Spanish-speaking series. Since 2011, a series of online publications has been added ( Oñate Socio- Legal Series).
