International Literature Award

The International Prize for Literature - The House of World Cultures is a literary award for an "outstanding foreign-language title of international contemporary literatures and its German original translation ", which is awarded annually since 2009 by the House of world cultures and elementary Foundation. It is endowed with a total of 35,000 euros; 25,000 euros of which to the author and the translator € 10,000.

Background

The prize aims to raise awareness of current literary voices from around the world and to appreciate the teaching performance of literary translators. The award is intended to draw attention to the wealth of new publications in the German book market on excellent quality and exceptional works of international literature.

A jury of renowned literary critics and scientists determined the two winners in a multistage process. So were about to jury 2009/2010: Christian Döring ( editor and literary critic ), Ottmar Ette ( literary scholar, University of Potsdam), Sigrid Löffler ( literary critic ), Catherine Narbutovic (Head of Berlin Artists Programme of the DAAD ), Peter Ripken ( International Centre Frankfurt Book Fair) Jan Szlovak ( Chairman of the Board of Elementary Foundation ) and Susanne Stemmler ( Head of Department literature, House of world Cultures ).
