International Ornithological Committee

The International Ornithological Union ( IOU ) is the successor company of the International Ornithological Committee ( IOC) which existed 1884-2010. She is an international body, which consists of over 200 ornithologists. Objectives of the IOU are researching the anatomy, walks, the way of life and the protection of birds in their natural habitat. In addition, the International Ornithological Union engaged in the breeding, domestication, taxonomy and nomenclature of birds.

1872 defeated the Switzerland before a monitoring commission for the international protection of birds. This led to the creation of the International Ornithological Congress, at its first meeting on 10 April 1884 in Vienna, the International Ornithological Committee was established. President of the First International Ornithological Congress was the German naturalist Gustav Radde. After irregular congresses 1891-1910 every four years were 1926-1938 and from 1950 international ornithological congress conducted, including 1891 in Budapest ( President: Victor Fatio & Ottó Herman), 1900 in Paris (President: Émile oustalet ) 1905 in London (President: Richard Bowdler Sharpe ), in Berlin in 1910 (President: Anton Reichenow ), 1926 in Copenhagen (President: Ernst Hartert ), 1930 in Amsterdam (President: Einar Lönnberg ), 1934 in Oxford (President: Erwin Stresemann ), 1938 in Rouen (President: Alessandro Ghigi ), 1950 in Uppsala (President: Alexander Wetmore ), 1954 in Basel (President: Arthur Landsborough Thomson ), 1958 in Helsinki (President: Jacques Berlioz, 1962 in Ithaca, New York (President: Ernst Mayr ), 1966 in Oxford (President: David Lack ), 1970 in the Hague ( President: Nikolaas Tinbergen & Finn Salomonsen ), 1974 in Canberra (President: Jean Dorst ), in Berlin in 1978 (President: Donald Sankey Farner ), 1982 in Moscow ( President: Lars von Haartman ), 1986 in Ottawa (President: Klaus Immelmann ), 1990 in Christchurch (President: Charles Sibley ), 1994 in Vienna (President: Christopher Perrins ), 1998 in Durban (President: Peter Berthold ), 2002 in Beijing (President: Walter J. Bock ) 2006 in Hamburg ( Chairman: Jacques Blondel ), 2010 in Campos do Jordão (President: John Charteris Wingfield ) and 2014 in Tokyo (President Franz Bairlein ).

At the International Ornithological Congress, Campos do Jordão, renamed the International Ornithological Committee in International Ornithological Union of German ornithologist Franz Bairlein was 21 August 2010 decided and elected president.

Publications of the IOU, the International Ornithological Congress Proceedings of the the Journal Ornis and the World Bird List, which annually publishes an updated list of the English common name nomenclature and takes into account changes in the taxonomy.
