Interoceanic Highway

Transoceanica or Carretera Transoceanica ( in German: transoceanic highway ) is the name of a proposed road connecting the Atlantic and the Pacific on South American soil, which has already been completed for the most part. The road will then continue from São Paulo via Cuiaba, Porto Velho, Rio Branco, Puerto Maldonado to Cusco and from here to the Peruvian ports of San Juan de Marcona, Arequipa and Ilo.

Mainly this road is built for economic reasons. It should enable trade between Peru and Brazil and the export of raw materials from the Amazon region, particularly soy, ease into the Asian markets over the Latin American Pacific ports. On the other hand, it means that the Transoceanica is an important step for the joint community UNASUR. Thus, the integration of Peru into Brazil is to be pursued, and vice versa.

Critics see by the road near the border with Peru, especially on the Peruvian side, several of the most species-rich forests of the earth and the living there isolated indigenous peoples at risk.
