Iota subscript

The iota subscript (Latin, " written under Iota", Greek Ἰῶτα ὑπογεγραμμένη [ iota hypogegramménē ] ) is a diacritical mark in the polytonic orthography of Greek script. It has the shape of the small letter iota ( ι ) is placed under an alpha, eta or Omega:

Upper case letters avoids the iota subscript and sets the Iota Iota instead mostly as adscriptum addition to the preceding vowel ( Αι, Ηι, Ωι ). Iota adscriptum thing is to recognize that accents and alcohol are not as diphthongs on the iota, but before the first vowel ( eg Αιδης; indistinguishable from the uncontracted poetic form Αἰδης ).

Originally decreed the ancient Greek language on the Langdiphthonge ai, ei and oi, the αι, ηι and written ωι. That was ῳ in the Archaic period still used ( up to the 7th century BC) as a diphthong, demonstrated by the fact that the Greek word τραγῳδία as Tragoedia ( from " tragedy " ) adopted into Latin was. Between the 5th and 4th centuries trailed the second part of the diphthong and was also omitted from the Scriptures. In Byzantine times it was reintroduced, but put under the preceding letter to clarify that this is dumb i.

Today in most text output Iota subscript is set in the popular school pronunciation of ancient Greek, the i is not spoken. In the alphabetical arrangement (eg dictionaries ) is not counted. In the transcription of Ancient Greek words it is usually omitted ( eg τραγῳδία, Tragodia instead tragōidia ). Only in scientific transliteration it is represented by a j or below set point.

Modern Greek Iota subscript was like the grave accent eliminated during the language reform of 1976, when the old katharevousa of Dimotiki was replaced as the official language. The Iota adscriptum was not represented in the modern Greek language. The remaining sound and touch characters Spiritus asper ( rough aspirate ) and Spiritus lenis (slight aspirate ) were abolished by the only commonly used today in the acute course of the reform of 1982, as these characters phonetically play no role.
