Ipomoea nil

Ipomoea nil ' Akatsukinoumi '

The Blue Morning Glory ( Ipomoea nil ) is a plant of the genus morning glories (Ipomoea ) from the family of wind plants ( Convolvulaceae ). The occurrence of the plant is pantropical.

Description

The Blue morning glory is an annual vine that is densely hairy to scattered with long trichomes. The finely hairy leaves are ovate to nearly circular, 5-14 cm long. The base is heart-shaped, the margin is entire or three to five lobed, the lobes are pointed or tapered.

The appearing of July until December blossoms are individually up to fifth in the often dense zymösen groups in which fully developed flowers and developing buds stand together. The long bristly sepals have a length of 15 to 25 mm, they are long lanceolate linear - lanceolate a tip. The crown is blue, purple or almost scarlet. Often the throat is white in color. The corolla tube has a length of 3 to 5 cm, the coronet has a width of 4 to 5 cm.

The fruits are nearly spherical to spherical capsule fruits with a diameter of 8 to 12 mm. The seeds are pear-shaped and densely covered with short trichomes.

Occurrence

The species is pantropical distributed to and is also often found in culture.

System

The Blue Morning Glory is within the subgenus Ipomoea classified in the series Heterophyllae of section Pharbitis ( and sometimes still performed under the synonym Pharbitis nil).

The species is often confused with Ipomoea indica, Ipomoea hederacea or Ipomoea purpurea. Ipomoea indica differs mainly by the broad and less herbaceous sepals, while Ipomoea purpurea has pointed and blunt sepals. The distinction of Ipomoea nil and Ipomoea hederacea is much more difficult in the latter case, however, the sepals are slightly more constricted and are further from or are rolled back.
