Iproniazid is a hydrazine derivative used as an antidepressant. It is an irreversible non-selective inhibitors of monoamine oxidase (MAO ) inhibitors. Even though it is now rarely used in most parts of the world, it is still used in France.

History

Iproniazide the first marketed antidepressant ever was. Originally, however, it was designed as a remedy for tuberculosis. 1952 its antidepressant properties were discovered when the researchers found that the patients treated with iproniazid " unusually cheerful " were. 1958 was approved as an antidepressant, but in 1961 again removed from the market after cases of hepatitis occurred, and replaced by less liver- toxic substances such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine, and tranylcypromine.
