İpsala (Greek Κύψελα, Kypsela ) is a Turkish district town in East Thrace in the province of Edirne on the Turkish- Greek border at the river Meric ( Evros Greek, antique Hebrus ).

The river delta landscape at İpsala consists mainly of rice fields. Because of its rich bird set, it is popular as a hunting ground.

The border crossing from İpsala is the largest transition to Greece. Much of the exchange of goods between Europe and Turkey will take place via İpsala. In the 1990s, began to modernize the border crossing. The border can be crossed only by car and not on foot.

History

İpsala has a 4000 year old Thracian and Byzantine history. It was conquered by the Persian king Darius I. 1356 began under Murat I. Ottoman rule after the Byzantine commander was defeated Evranos.
