Ireland Act 1949

The Ireland Act 1949 is an Act of the British Parliament, which should take into account the consequences of the Republic of Ireland Act of the Irish Parliament. This law is still largely in place, but by the Northern Ireland Act (1998) changed something.

Provisions

The main provision is that the founding of the Republic of Ireland and that she has left the Commonwealth accepts that but "the Republic of Ireland no foreign " is. In addition, it is noted that in the UK the name Republic of Ireland can take the place of Éire. This part is still applicable.

The law laid down also that Northern Ireland remains part of the United Kingdom to give the local unionist majority the guarantee that Northern Ireland for so long can be a part of the United Kingdom, as it wants to. This was the first legal guarantee of this kind that has been given Northern Ireland.
