Irene Abel

Irene Abel ( born February 12, 1953 in Berlin) is a former German gymnast devices, which belonged to the GDR 's national team from 1971 to 1974. She started for the SC Dynamo Berlin.

Career

Irene Abel had done gymnastics for seven years at SC Einheit Dresden, when she won the junior tournament of the socialist countries on the balance beam in 1968. She was then delegated to the SC Dynamo Berlin and trained with Jürgen Heritz. In 1971, she finished in the GDR championships in second place on the ground and third place in the horse jump. In 1972, she failed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Munich. The East German team with Irene Abel, Angelika Hellmann, Karin Janz, Richarda bouncer, Christine Schmitt and Erika Zuchold won silver behind the gymnasts from the Soviet Union. In multiplayer battle Irene Abel placed on the eleventh place, but could not reach an apparatus final. At the World Championships 1974 in Varna, the GDR team with Irene Abel, Heike Gerisch, Angelika Hellmann, Bärbel Rohrich, Richarda bouncer and Annelore prong again won silver behind the Soviet team. In multiplayer battle Abel reached the 14th place.
