Christine Schmitt

Christine Schmitt ( born May 26, 1953 in Rostock, according to Christine Marriage Dreßel ) is a former German gymnast devices, which belonged to the GDR 's national team from 1967 to 1972. She started for the SC Empor Rostock.

Career

Christine Schmitt was in 1968 in the East German Cup third on balance beam. As a substitute gymnast she ran to the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico, but did not play. In 1969 she finished behind Karin Janz in the GDR Cup second place in the all around. In 1970, then its most successful year. In the GDR Championships she won again behind Karin Janz second place in the all around, the balance beam, she won the championship title at the three other devices they reached each second. The 1970 World Cup was held in Ljubljana. The East German team (see picture) won silver behind the Soviet gymnasts. As a ninth of the multi- fight, Christine Schmitt failed to qualify for the finals on balance beam. There Erika Zuchold won before the US -American Cathy Rigby; Christine Schmitt won with Larissa Petrik bronze.

Christine Schmitt returned in 1972 after a lengthy injury lay back in the GDR team and was able to qualify for the Olympic Games in Munich. The East German team with Irene Abel, Angelika Hellmann, Karin Janz, Richarda bouncer, Christine Schmitt and Erika Zuchold won silver behind the gymnasts from the Soviet Union. Schmitt finished third in the all-around 15th place, but reached no more singles final.

For her sporting achievements, she received the 1972 Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.

Christine Schmitt graduated after her career studying at the DHfK in Leipzig, and has since become a PE teacher at a school in Leipzig.
