Irene Palaiologina (Byzantine empress)

Irene Palaiologina († 1391 ) was the wife of the Byzantine emperor Maththaios Asanes Cantacuzenus.

Family

Irene was the daughter of Demetrios Palaiologos and his wife Theodora. Their paternal grandparents were Andronikos II ( Byzantium ) and his wife Yolande of Montferrat. Irene has Maththaios Asanes Cantacuzenus married ( Byzantine emperor from 1353 to 1357 and Despot of Morea from 1380 to 1383 ). They had five children:

  • Demetrius I Cantacuzenus, Sebastocrator and Despot of the Morea.
