Demetrios I Kantakouzenos

Demetrius I Cantacuzenus (Greek Δημήτριος Καντακουζηνός, * 1343, † 1384-1420 ) was Byzantine Despot of Morea in 1383.

Family and ancestors

Demetrius I Cantacuzenus belongs to the Byzantine imperial family of Cantacuzenus, as well as to the Bulgarian royal family of Asanes. He was the son of Maththaios Asanes Cantacuzenus, Despot of Morea, and Irene Palaiologina, granddaughter of Andronikos II ( Byzantium ) and Yolande ( Violante, Irene ) of Montferrat. His grandfather was John VI. Cantacuzenus. By the ancestors of the great-grandmother, Yolande ( Violante, Irene ) of Montferrat, Demetrius I is related to several royal houses of Europe. This is evidenced by the pedigree of Demetrios I..

History

From 1361 Demetrios was Mitdespot of Morea. The Byzantine emperor John V Palaiologos decided in 1381 Maththaios Asanes Cantacuzenus by his son Theodore to replace I. Palaiologos. With all diplomatic means, but ultimately unsuccessful, Maththaios tried to avert that decision. He handed over power to Demetrios 1383 and commissioned him to make the transfer to the Palaiologues peaceful and quiet. The attempt of Demetrius, still to resist the transfer of power to Theodor I. Palaiologos failed.

A grandson or nephew ( depending on the source ) of Demetrios, Manuel Cantacuzenus tried in 1453 to take over the power in the Morea, shortly after the fall of Constantinople Opel.

Demetrius I or his brother Joannes are considered ancestors of the Romanian branch of the family, called Cantacuzino. Whether this case is the successor of Demetrius I or his brother Ioannes, is controversial among historians. What is certain is the descent from the father Maththaios.
