Properties
Iridium hexafluoride is a yellow crystalline solid which melts at 44 ° C and boils at 53.6 ° C. He is in the form of bright yellow shining leaflets and needles which are intensely golden yellow and glassy above -15 ° C. It is very hygroscopic, attacks glass. Platinum is corroded from 400 ° C. Halogens reduce it at room temperature to iridium (IV ) fluoride. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (measured at -140 ° C) in the space group Pnma with the lattice parameters a = 941.1 pm, b = 854.7 pm and c = 495.2 pm and four formula units per unit cell with a calculated density of 5.11 g · cm -3. The IrF6 molecule is octahedral ( Oh); the Ir -F bond length is 183.3 pm.
