IRIX

IRIX is a commercial Unix operating system of the company Silicon Graphics (SGI ) and was designed to run MIPS - based systems from SGI. Due to its high scalability, it can be used on workstations and supercomputers, and thus provides a basis for the use in high performance computing (HPC ) and graphics calculations. The system comes from the UNIX System V from family and is available in both 32 -bit and 64- bit versions.

The main applications include computer animation, medicine and research (computed tomography, molecular chemistry, microscopy ), geology (visualization of fossil raw materials, digital landscape models) and military (Constructive simulation) and computer -aided design (CAD).

Features

Under IRIX comes since version 5.3, the XFS journaling file system used previously was the extent File System ( EFS ) was used. As a window manager IRIX used 4dwm. The licenses of IRIX are always connected to the computer by SGI, that is, if one buys a computer from SGI, one acquires thus a IRIX license.

IRIX meets the standards POSIX and UNIX 95 The development history and the names of the versions are not entirely uncontroversial. Under the name of the IRIX system first appeared shortly after the transition from Motorola 68000 family on the MIPS architecture. Guaranteed is the designation for IRIX Release 3.1. The current version is 5.6.30 16 August 2006, the manufacturer has discontinued the production of SGI IRIX / MIPS at 29 December 2006.; But support for existing customers, there will be by the end of 2013. New (hardware ) products from SGI are running Red Hat Enterprise Linux or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server delivered.
