Iro Lake

The Iro - Lake is a temporary water-bearing lake in an inland delta in the Moyen- Chari region of southeastern Chad. It is fed in the summer and autumn months from the eastern arm of the Salamat, seven kilometers south-west of the lake forks. The lake is located about 100 kilometers north of the border with the Central African Republic. He is nearly oval, 15 kilometers long and 7 kilometers wide. During prolonged dry periods, the lake may fall completely dry.

The Iro - Lake is located about 387 meters above sea level and covers an average area of ​​100 km ². The lake shore is occupied by a herbaceous vegetation. The influence of humans is low on the lake, but it is an important fishing center of the region, so 1,000 tons of fish in the lake and the adjacent floodplains of Salamat per year are caught. The Iro - Lake since 2006 has been part of the Ramsar area Plaines d' inondation the Bahr Salamat et Aouk, which has a national significance and is one of the largest protected areas of this kind worldwide.
