Isa ibn Ali Al Khalifa

Sheikh Isa Isa ibn Ali Al or I. Khalifa (Arabic عيسى بن علي آل خاليفة, DMG ʿ ibn ʿ Alī Īsā Āl Halifa, * 1848, † December 9, 1932 ) was from 1869 until his death, ruler of Bahrain. His title was " Hakim of Bahrain ."

Isa was the fourth son of Sheikh Ali bin Khalifa al Khalifa, who had deposed his brother Muhammad ibn Khalifa Al Khalifa in September 1868, had followed him on the throne. This was completed in 1861 with the British, a protection treaty, which Bahrain had become a kind of de facto British protectorate. 1869, the warring brothers Ali and Muhammad delivered at Rifa'a a battle, was killed in Ali. Then first took a relative, Sheikh Muhammad bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, who had held office as Governor of Damman and Rifa'a, the rule; but this was sold in December of Ali's sons to India.

Isa took over now, along with another brother, the government violence. After the death of his brother in 1888 he reigned as sole ruler. The protectorate treaty with Britain was renewed in 1892. While the internal affairs of Bahrain remained largely under the control of the sheikhs, the British retained the foreign policy front - Isa could not independently enter into agreements with other powers -, but pledged the British to repel attacks on Bahrain military. Since 1926, Charles Belgrave served as advisor to the aging Isa and helped advance social reforms after the pearl fishery, the country's traditionally important economic sector, a decline experienced; also attended the British that possible rivalries within the Al Khalifa clan were avoided by Isa's death. Isa died in 1932 in the Bahraini capital of Manama after 63 years of rule, one of the longest periods of reign of a monarch worldwide. He was succeeded by his son Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifa on the throne.
