Isaac Israëls

Isaac Lazarus Israels ( born February 3, 1865 in Amsterdam, † October 7, 1934 in The Hague) was a Dutch painter.

As the son of Jozef Israels, who was also a painter, he had developed in childhood an interest in painting. Between 1878 and 1880 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. In 1881, at the age of 16, he sold a not yet finished painting to the artist and collector Hendrik Willem Mesdag. In 1882, he sent one of his first works, Begrafenis Militaire ( Military funeral ), the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. From 1886 Israels in Amsterdam, where he enrolled at the local Imperial Academy of Fine Arts to complete his studies; However, he only stayed for a year. Israels often spent the summer with his father in Scheveningen. There he worked often together with the German painter Max Liebermann. Interested in the changing light of the sun and sea, he painted a number of color -rich coastal scenes. Introduced by Thérèse Schwartze, he devoted himself also designs from the fashion world with mannequins and seamstresses.

In Amsterdam, Israels was a friend of George Hendrik Breitner. The two artists began a fleeting moments from everyday life of the Dutch capital. Between 1903 and 1923 Israels spent most of his time working in Paris and London.

In the art competitions of the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928, he won in the category Painting the gold medal for his painting " tab in the red skirt ."
