Isabel de Warenne, Countess of Surrey

Isabel de Warenne, 4th Countess of Surrey ( * 1136, † July 12, 1203, buried in Lewes Priory at Lewes ) was an English nobleman. She was the only surviving heir of William de Warenne, 3rd Earl of Surrey and his wife Adela, daughter of Count William III. of Ponthieu.

In 1148 she inherited the property of her father and thus became Countess of Surrey in its own right. In the same year she married William of Blois, the younger son of King Stephen. The marriage was concluded at a critical time during the English Civil War and was part of the experiment, Stephen, to get possession of the Warenne family under his control. The marriage remained childless, William died in the year 1159th

1162/63 William FitzEmpress held for her hand, the third son of Count Geoffrey Plantagenet of Anjou and the " Empress" Matilda of England - for the same reason as it did William of Blois. However, Thomas Becket refused a dispensation because of existing kinship. In April 1164 married Isabel then Hamelin, half-brother Williams, making this also Earl of Surrey from the right of his wife ( jure uxoris ) was. The couple had four children who survived their parents:

  • Adela (c. 1170 ), she was the mistress of King John Lackland.
  • Isabel († November 30, 1234 )
  • Matilda,

Hamelin died 1202, Isabel in the following year. Both were buried in the chapter house of Lewes Priory.
