History

The original, and the locals still common name of the place was Pasagan. By 1844, the area was occupied by the Spaniards and the place was in July 1845 in honor of the Spanish Queen Isabella II, its current name. During the Spanish and later American occupation of Basilan was part of the province of Zamboanga.

With the " Rep. Act 288 " was on the island of Basilan, a city named on July 1, 1948 " Basilan City " appointed, which housed a total of 10 administrative parishes. One of them was the church Isabel. 1937 Basilan was politically divided by the then large Zamboanga.

On 11 December 1975, the number of administrative municipalities was reduced to 7, wherein the municipality of Isabela club mimicked both the city of Basilan City, as well as the community Malamawi.

In 2000, the first efforts were made to convert the administrative municipality into a city. Since April 25, 2001 Isabela City is now an official city in the Philippines.

Although the inhabitants of Basilan in the recent referendums in favor of membership in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao ( ARMM ), the residents of Isabela City continues to speak out against such an affiliation. For this reason, the city itself is officially part of the district of Zamboanga Peninsula, established by the Executive Order No. 36 of 19 September 2001.
