Isidor Rosenthal

Julius Isidor Rosenthal ( * July 16, 1836 in Labischin; † January 2, 1915 in Erlangen, Germany ) was a German physiologist.

Rosenthal in 1859 received his doctorate at the University of Berlin, where he was a student of Emil Heinrich Du Bois -Reymond. He remained in Berlin as an assistant at the Institute of Physiology, 1862, and 1867 habilitation assistant professor. In 1872 he was appointed professor of physiology at the University of Erlangen.

His research interests were the physiology of breathing and thermoregulation in warm blooded animals. He was the author of several articles in Ludimar Hermann's textbook of physiology. In 1881 he became editor of the journal Biological Zentralblatt.

In 1877, he requested and received the citizenship of Erlangen. Politically, he was active in the Progressive People's Party. Rosenthal campaigned for the construction of the Erlanger Wasserleitungssnetzes and was instrumental in the construction of the abattoir. In 1906 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Erlangen, and in 1908 the title of Royal Privy Councillor, he was awarded. In 1909 he was made an honorary Doctor of Erlanger philosophical faculty. In 1913 he retired.

Rosenthal was buried at the town's central cemetery because he had resigned from the Jewish religious community.
