Isidore Pils

Isidore Pils ( born July 19, 1813 in Paris. † September 3, 1875 in Douarnenez, Finistère Dépt ) was a French painter and watercolorist.

With 21 years was Pils 1834 in Paris pupil of history painter François -Edouard Picot. He devel welte the more " classic " in the direction of his teacher in a decidedly more realistic direction. Supported by Picot Pils participated in exhibitions of the Académie des Beaux -Arts, and in 1838 was his picture Peter heals the lame excellent. He was awarded the Prix de Rome, coupled with a generous study stay at the Villa Medici in Rome.

After five years Pils returned in 1843 returned to France and settled again in his hometown. Later he undertook further extended study trips; inter alia, Asia Minor and the Crimea. There he was an observer of the Crimean War, and his pictures from there were long considered the epitome of patriotism; e.g. 1855 " The trenches before Sebastopol ."

Back in Paris, Pils devoted then some time rather religious themes and completed in 1875 his last work: the paintings on the vaulted ceiling in the stairwell of the New Opera (the " Gods of Olympus ", " Apollo in his chariot ," " triumph of harmony" and " apotheosis of the opera".
