Isla de la Luna

The Isla de la Luna ( Moon Island ger, also Isla Koati ) is an island in the Bolivian part of Lake Titicaca.

The "moon island " belongs to the district ( bolivian: Municipio) Copacabana in the province of Manco Kapac. It is 2.80 km long, 0.76 km wide, 4.1 km from the mainland and 7 kilometers from the neighboring Isla del Sol ( Island of the Sun dt ) is removed. Although the highest elevation of the island is only 115 m above the water level of the lake, but so 3,925 m above sea level ( sea level ).

The inhabitants of the island speak Quechua, Aymara and Spanish.

During the 1940s, the island served as Bolivia's main prison or concentration camp, after the coup against President Villarroel in 1946 several hundred insurgent peasants were interned here.
