Isla del Trocadero

The Isla del Trocadero is an island in the Bay of Cádiz, in the southern Spanish city of Cadiz in Andalusia.

Location

The Isla del Trocadero is separated from the mainland by the 3.4 km long and 35 to 150 meters wide Caño de Trocadero. The island is 4.3 km long and up to 1.0 km wide, and has an area of 5.25 km ². It is located in the southern part of the Bay of Cádiz, in the southwest of the port city of Puerto Real, between the estuaries of the Río de San Pedro in the north and the Caño de Sancti Petri in the South.

North of the island leads the national road N -443 from Puerto Real to Cadiz. The industrial area PolÃgono El Trocadero and the driveway to the main road called El Trocadero point to the close proximity to the island.

History

The former fortress Trocadero was at the center of the Battle of Trocadero from 1823. This ended with the storming of the fortress by French troops and marked the end of the Spanish revolution.

Sanctuary

The Isla del Trocadero is part of the 10,000 -acre reserve and natural park Parque Natural de la Bahía de Cádiz. The entire area consists mainly of marshland, beaches, cane fields and dunes. It is an important wetland area and landing zone for migratory birds of the area.

The following bird species are found on the Isla del Trocadero: gannets, storks, cormorants, grebes, seagull, flamingo, terns, eagles and avocets.

Use of the island

The island can be reached from the ports of Puerto Real and Matagorda from. It is ideal for bird watching. In winter, wintering water and marine birds and various species of migratory birds during migration can be observed.

The island is but visited by hikers, windsurfers and sailors. Small parts of the island are used for salt production.
