Isla Santa Margarita

The Isla Santa Margarita is a Mexican island in the Pacific Ocean. It is located a few kilometers off the west coast of the southern part of the Baja California peninsula and is part of the state of Baja California Sur. It represents the southernmost territory of the municipality Comondú; within the community Comondú the island belongs to delegación Puerto San Carlos. The island has an area of 231 km ², its coastline is about 96 km and its highest elevation is 610 meters. Santa Margarita is part of the municipality Comondú, the only place on the island is the 128 inhabitants of Puerto Cortés, located approximately in the middle of the east coast. There exists a small base of the Mexican Navy, otherwise the only source of income in fishing. The Isla Santa Margarita closes together with their northern neighbor island of Isla Magdalena and some smaller islands and sandbanks off the Magdalena Bay lagoon from the open ocean; this area is known as Paarungsort for gray whales and habitat for many seabirds.
