Island6

The island6 Arts Center ( Chinese:六 岛 艺术 中心) is a creative platform and at the same time the exhibition space, operated by artists in Shanghai, People's Republic of China. It was founded by the French curator and artist Thomas Charveriat to life in 2006.

One of the main tasks of island6 is to give contemporary artists who explore with their works in particular social, aesthetic and philosophical issues, a forum. " In a series of closely curated group exhibitions, a variety of European and Chinese artists will be shown side by side. " Since April 2006, the Art Center is in the bohemian district of Shanghai, the heart of which the Moganshan Lu is represented. To date, island6 issued the works of about 500 artists from 21 different countries in more than 70 exhibitions, sponsored 139 Artist in residency programs and helped in the creation of approximately 2,000 art projects. In 2007 island6 founded the Multimedia Arts Group Liu Dao. Under this name, performance, sound, photography and video artists work together with technicians in the creation of electronic art. The island6 Arts Center since 2010 focuses solely on in-house art collective Liu Dao.

History

Island6 & the Fou Foong Flour Mill

No. 120 island6 was opened in the Fou Foong Flour Mill in the Moganshan Road. The flour mill is a four-story brick building, which was designed in 1897 by the British architect office Dalles & Atkinson. The mill was founded by the brothers Duoxin Sun and Sun Duosen who came from the province of Anhui. In the 19th century it was the largest and most modern mill in Asia since their founding fathers were the first American machinery imported to China. Liu Dao

The artist collective Liu Dao is the most productive and most abundant presence of island6 Arts Center. In their works, the artists transform video recordings of simple movements into animated sequences. This creates seductive LED displays, moving oscillating in their own reality.
