Isleornsay

Isleornsay ( Scottish Gaelic: Eilean Iarmain or Eilean Dhiarmaid, German: " Iarmans island " or " Dermot's Island" ) is a small village on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. It is located east of the peninsula Sleat about 11 kilometers south of Broadford. The offshore island Ornsay provides good protection, so that Isleornsay has one of the best natural harbors in southern Skye.

The town was founded as a port for herring fishing in the early 19th century. Then Isleornsay was often visited by the ships of Glasgow as a stopover. 1820 there the first public toilet was built on Skye. For a long time was the port the main connection to the mainland. The post office of the place was the main post of the Sleat peninsula.

Near the harbor, Hotel Eilean Iarmain and the gallery is located at Talla Dearg. The hotel was built in 1888 and is now owned by Sir Iain Noble, a businessman, who is actively working for the revival and preservation of the Scottish Gaelic language on Skye.

Name

Because of the name Isleornsay is often confused with the actual island Ornsay, which is upstream of the site. The Scottish Gaelic name is Eilean Iarmain or Eilean Dhiarmaid ( German: " Diarmad 's Island" ). It is believed that Eilean Dhiarmaid the original name of the town was inspired by the warrior Diarmuid, who temporarily lived there together with Fionn mac Cumhaill and Oisín. According to oral tradition also Cu Chulainn held on there.
