Isoeugenol belongs to the group of phenylpropanoids and is a yellowish liquid with a characteristic smell of clove. Of course, it occurs as a mixture of cis and trans isomers, the proportion of the trans isomer predominates. Isoeugenol comes, inter alia, in front of ylang- ylang oil, nutmeg oil, clove and dill.

Isomerization of eugenol ( 1) to isoeugenol ( 2) with alkalis and subsequent oxidation by potassium permanganate or ozone to vanillin can technically win.

Toxicity

Isoeugenol is not genotoxic but caused hepatocellular carcinomas and adenomas in male mice after oral administration. It is both an antioxidant and a pro-oxidant; based on the latter probably his ( mucus ) skin-irritating, allergy -promoting effect.

Terms of Use

Because of ( skin ) sensitizing and allergenic potential is isoeugenol labeled in (Annex 2 of the Cosmetics Regulation ), if it remain for more than 0.001% in products on the skin or to more than 0.01% in products rinsed off is contained.
