Isola dei Pescatori

The Isola dei Pescatori ( German: Fisherman's Island ), Isola Superiore: appointed ( German upper island), one of the Borromean Islands in Lake Maggiore. It is the only island in the lake that is permanently inhabited since the beginning of the 14th century until today.

Location and size

The elongated island stretches to a length of about 350 m from northwest to southeast and is at its widest point, about 100 m wide. The 3.4 hectares are cultivated in the south-east to the fishing village. The northwest of the island shapes an old tree-lined avenue. The port is located on the south shore of the island. There, the fishing piers have for their boats, which are partially protected by a high stone wall. Next to this are the docks for water taxis and passenger ships. Isola dei Pescatori counted in 1971 still 208 inhabitants, the state of the last census, but only 57.

Economy and Tourism

The inhabitants live from fishing and tourism. During the season, several restaurants and souvenir stalls are open. At the Lido in the northwest can also picnic, bathed in Lake Maggiore or Bocchia be played.

Attractions

The most striking structure on the island is the parish church, dedicated to St. Victor (San Vittore ). The multi-storey houses have characteristic long balconies, at the railing of the traditional fish is dried. The harbor entrance is guarded by a life-size statue of the praying Madonna.

Events

Every year on August 15 ( ferragosto ), a procession with the statue of the patron saint on a boat around the islands, accompanied by numerous floating tourists and locals.
