Isola del Garda

Isola del Garda ( Garda German island) or Isola di Garda is the largest island in Lake Garda.

Geography

The island is located a few hundred meters before the Cap San Fermo, which closes the Gulf of San Felice del Benaco, Salo and between San Felice del Benaco.

It reaches a height of 88 meters. This is 23 meters above the lake. According to the 2001 census, the island had 10 inhabitants.

History

For the Romans, the island was a locus deliciarum (Lat. place of amusements ), with country houses and temples, as can be seen from inscriptions and remnants.

In the 8th century it was owned by the County of Garda, where she got her name. 879 it came with Carlomanno to the monastery of San Zeno of Verona. Francis of Assisi bought part of the island and founded a hermitage in 1221. The island was now called the " island of the monks ". These monks brought some crops to the lake, including the lemons.
