Israel Nathan Herstein

Israel " Yitzchak " Nathan Herstein ( born March 28, 1923 in Lublin, † February 9, 1988 in Chicago) was an American mathematician who worked primarily with algebra.

Hersteins family moved in 1928 to Canada, where he studied at the University of Manitoba and the University of Toronto (Master 1946). In 1948 he received his doctorate from Indiana University at Max Zorn ( " Divisor Algebras "). After that, he was at the University of Kansas, Ohio State University, the University of Chicago (1950, with Abraham Adrian Albert) from the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University before becoming a professor in 1962 in Chicago.

He is mainly known for his work in the theory of noncommutative rings. Herstein is also known for his algebra textbooks.
