The İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi ( German: Istanbul Bilgi University) is a private university with 11,000 students currently in Istanbul. In Turkey, she has held as an independent institution by their liberal research a special position.

History

The Bilgi Education and Culture Foundation Foundation founded on 31 October 1994, the first Istanbul School of International Studies (ISIS). The objective was to make the formation of a private university where research should be independent from the state and institutions, an outdated university system. This university should have the following priorities:

  • Foreign Languages, social science and natural science
  • Link between culture and science, which is based on respect and tolerance
  • Organization of seminars, conferences, meetings etc. for critical analysis ( historical ) issues
  • Support of individuals or institutions that promote cultural activities

On June 7 In 1996, the Istanbul Bilgi University was founded, which occupies a special role with their liberal view. Since inception, the number of their students has risen to 11,000. Since 2006, the University operates a joint venture with the American Education Group, Laureate Education.

Research

As a basis for advanced research, the University of Bilgi provides for the satisfaction of an individual and the society. The university is known for its liberal research and seeks to promote free thinking and creativity. In the free access to education and science, she sees a fundamental human right. Besides offering the regular faculties, the university operates several collaborative research centers such as the Center for Migration Research, the Human Rights Law Research Center or the Social, Economic and Political Research Center. As part of the research in these areas, some conferences have already been held at the University, who have dealt with critical issues in Turkish society, such as the discussion about the genocide of the Armenians 1915-1917. The language of instruction is generally English, only exception is the law school with Turkish speaking events.

In addition to the language of instruction and the cooperation with foreign universities in Germany, France, England and the USA, have memberships in networks such as the Erasmus Student Network (ESN ) on the international orientation of Bilgi University back. The University is a member of the European University Association (EUA ), the International Association of Universities (IAU ) and the OECD / IMHE.

Organization

The University of Bilgi is headed by nine curators who choose every four years a rector. Overall, the university has four faculties, a vocational school and has four institutions.

As a private university funding is largely from tuition fees. The cost per course amount to $ 1,400, so that the fees can amount for one semester up to 10,000 U.S. dollars. On the part of the University is a scholarship provided, so compared to state universities, the composition is less homogeneous poorer students. The admission requirement is in addition to the ( Turkish ) High School an IELTS or TOEFL test.

Libraries and museums

Bilgi has two libraries, one in Dolapdere and a Kustepe on campus. Furthermore, the establishment of Turkey 's largest library on campus in Sanstralistanbul in planning. In addition to the planned library is a modern art museum. A virtual library, to which the students can access the internet from outside the campus, including 25,000 e -books, 23,000 scientific journals, 37 databases and encyclopedias.

Location

The Istanbul Bilgi University is divided into three campuses. The campuses are located on the European side of Istanbul in the districts Kustepe (main campus), as well as in Dolapdere Santral at the end of the Golden Horn. The modern campuses were deliberately placed in poorer neighborhoods to illustrate the contrast between rich and poor and between tradition and modernity.
