István Türr

István Türr ( German Stephan Türr; born August 11, 1825 Baja, † May 3, 1908 in Budapest) was a Hungarian patriot.

Life

Türr joined as a lieutenant Hungarian Grenadier Regiment at which was stationed in Italy in 1848 and went live in January 1849 to the Piedmontese, organized a Hungarian legion, fought after the Battle of Novara in 1849 on the side of the insurgents in Baden. He joined in 1854 in English services, was arrested in 1855 on a trip for the purpose of purchase of horses in Pest, fired again and fought 1859 as captain of the Alpenjäger under Garibaldi against the Austrians. 1860 in Sicily and Naples, here attained the rank of General of Division, after he had contributed as governor of Naples much to its union with Italy.

In 1866 he prepared an insurrection in Hungary from Serbia. In 1867 he returned to Hungary, where he engaged in designs of canals and industrial enterprises, lived. Sometimes he took as a trusted negotiator between Austria, Italy and France ( as in the negotiations for an alliance from 1869 to 1870 ), nor on the policy part. Since 1881, he directed the construction of the canal across the Isthmus of Corinth.
