Itatinga is a small town in São Paulo, Brazil. In 2010, there were 18 052 inhabitants. For the municipality include the core city Itatinga until 1938 São João de Itatinga, and the village Lôbo.

Geography

The municipality is located about 220 km west of the center of the City of São Paulo. Your neighboring communities clockwise from the north are Botucatu, Pardinho, Bofete, Angatuba, Paranapanema and Avaré.

The territory of Itatinga is 979.872 km ². It lies at an altitude of about 845 meters. The Jurumirim Reservoir is located on its southern edge ( Represa de Jurumirim ). In the village Lôbo there is a dam that impounds the Rio Pardo to generate electricity. In addition, there are other smaller rivers

The mild and dry climate is subtropical, with a mean annual temperature of 19.2 ° C.

History

The place name is derived from the Tupi- Guaraní language and means White stone. It refers to a natural monument east of the center.

The village Lôbo was created in 1875. The foundation of today's inner city in 1884 as São João de Itatinga, together with the erection of a chapel of St. John the Baptist. The community achieved its independence from the neighboring community Avaré on 24 July 1896. The community name was shortened in 1938 to Itatinga.

1914 a railway line was built through the town. This was a side track Botucatu - Avaré of Sorocaba railway. In 1953 was an expansion and electrification of the railway line. The track was in operation until 1999.

In 1951, Cistercian monks were from Germany settled in the town. They were expelled in 1938 by the Nazis from the monastery Hardehausen. Under the leadership of its abbot Alfonso Heun they built the monastery Assumption Hardehausen - Itatinga ( Abadia de Nossa Senhora da Assunção ).

Policy

The place is located in the Administrative Region IV Sorocaba. It belongs to mesoregion Baruru and there to the micro-region Avaré.

In the local elections of 2012, Paulo was Marcos Borges dos Santos of the Green Party (PV ) prevail with 56.62 % of the vote as prefect for the term 2013-2016.

Population

The city's inhabitants are mostly of European descent. The majority of the population (84 %) live in the urban core.

The Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística ( IBGE ) estimates a newer inhabitants in 2012 to 18 446 inhabitants.

Economy and infrastructure

The place has coverage over the basic infrastructure facilities such as water, sewerage and electricity.

Through the town the provincial road SP -280, the federal highway BR -374 crosses near the resort runs.

In the neighboring Avaré is the Aeroporto de Avaré - Arandu small airport. However, this is not served in regular service.
