Itoshima District, Fukuoka
Itoshima -gun (Japanese糸 岛 郡) was a county ( gun) in Fukuoka prefecture in Japan. Named the county is based on the eponymous peninsula.
He had in 2003 an area of 111.61 km ², with a population density of 279.30 persons per km ² and a total of about 31,173 inhabitants.
The district was created on February 26, 1896 and the educated under the ritsuryō Code counties Ito -gun (怡 土 郡) and Shima -gun (志摩 郡). The name of the former is probably due to the in Weizhi Worenchuan (Chinese魏志 倭人 传/魏志 倭人 传, W.-G. Wei -chih Where -jen - chuan, Japanese魏志 倭人 伝, Gishi Wajinden, dt " records of Wei: life of the people of Wa" ) mentioned Yayoi -temporal state Ito back and the second one simply means probably only island.
On January 1, 2010, the last two townships ( machi ) and Nijo Shima merged together with the independent city Maebaru the new community Itoshima ( Fukuoka ), whereby the district ceased to exist.
