Ivan Polzunov

Ivan Ivanovich Polsunow (Russian: Иван Иванович Ползунов, scientific transliteration Ivan Ivanovich Polzunov; * 1728 in Yekaterinburg, .. † 16 Maijul / May 27 1766greg in Barnaul ) was a Russian inventor. He invented the first steam engine in Russia and the first two-cylinder engine in the world.

Biography

Ivan Polsunow was born into a family originally from Turinsk soldiers. After the completion of the mining school ( Горнозаводская Школа ) in Yekaterinburg in 1742, he worked up there as a mechanic 's assistant. 1748 he went to Barnaul, where he worked as a technician in a metal processing plant. He devoted himself to the intensive study of existing scientific knowledge about the engineering, among others, the works of Mikhail Lomonosov. He was considered very talented people in the company and therefore was promoted in 1750 to shift supervisors.

In the 1750s Polsunow was used several times during the development of new silver mines. Was that at that time the transport of the ore only with use of horses and therefore was not very efficient, Polsunow moved to develop a special steam engine, the reduction should be technically optimized. Until April 1763 Polsunow prepared the draft of a 1.3 -kW two-cylinder engine. Since 1766 has come to the regular use of the new machine. For this invention Polsunow was honored by the Empress Catherine II personally and promoted to the rank of officer.

After the successful invention of the two-cylinder engine Polsunow took the work on the development of a larger thermal power plant, which should be the first of its kind worldwide. 1765, the project was largely completed, but the construction work designed very difficult for the machine. In addition, ill Polsunow already in 1764 from tuberculosis, which did not prevent him to participate actively in the construction. By 1766 his health deteriorated considerably. The work of Polsunow in Barnaul found his most important recognition by the award of the name Ivan Polsunow at the Technical University.
