Ivan Riley

Ivan Harris Riley ( born December 31, 1900 in Newton, Kansas, † October 28, 1943 in Kansas City, Kansas) was an American track and field athlete, who specializes in the hurdles. He started for the Illinois Athletic Club, was 1.83 m tall and 74 kg.

Riley won three championships:

  • National Championships: 1923 Champion 440 y hurdles ( 55.4 sec ); Runner 120 y hurdles
  • 1924 Champion 120 y hurdles ( 15.4 sec )
  • 1925 Course 4440 y

In 1924, he came at the state championships over the long hurdle distance is not the final and was in the excretions of the Olympic Games also in fourth place, but was allowed to travel along with Morgan Taylor, Charles Brookins and Chan Coulter as a runner in the 400m hurdles to Paris. Forward and semifinals, he finished each as the winner. In the final round he first met Taylor and the Finns Erkka Wilén. Taylor won in 52.6 sec think the gold medal ahead of Wilén who ran 53.8 sec. Riley followed in 54.2 sec in third place and won bronze.

Ivan Riley was able to place a total of five times in the top ten in the world rankings:

  • 8th place in 55.0 seconds over 400 meters hurdles, achieved on 26 August in Gothenburg
  • 8th place in 14.9 seconds in the 110m hurdles, achieved on 2 September in Copenhagen

After his athletics career, he worked as an architect. He died at the age of only 42 years of a brain tumor.
