Research priorities

His research focus was on JL Austin, John Stuart Mill and Aristotle. Urmson was posthumously out Austin's lecture series How to do things with words. Very well known are his contributions to the ethical debate eg his essays on grading (1950), The Interpretation of the Moral Philosophy of John Stuart Mill (1953) and Saints and Heros ( 1958) and his book on the ethics of Aristotle. Urmson considered the classification of actions in morally forbidden, permitted and obligatory as insufficient and added the concept of supererogatory a fourth category added: acts that are morally praiseworthy, but not obligatory. Mill he interpreted as Regelutilitaristen. None of his books has been translated into German. A German -language monograph, which deals with his work, is still lacking. Among the German philosopher he is, inter alia, rezipiert of Maximilian Forschner.
