Jabez Delano Hammond

Jabez Delano Hammond ( born August 2, 1778 in New Bedford, Massachusetts; † August 18, 1855 in Cherry Valley, New York) was an American physician, lawyer and politician. Between 1815 and 1817 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Jabez Delano Hammond was born during the Revolutionary War in New Bedford. He attended Preparatory Schools. Then he studied medicine. In 1799 he began to practice in Reading (Vermont ). He studied law. After receiving his license to practice law, he began 1805 in Cherry Valley to practice. In 1812 he was elected a Trustee of the Village of Cherry Valley. He sat in the Council of Appointment.

As opponents of a strong central government, he joined at that time, which was founded by Thomas Jefferson Democratic- Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1814 for the 14th Congress, he was in the 15th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he on March 4, 1815, the successor of Joel Thompson and Isaac Williams Jr. took that previously made together represent the District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He retired after the March 3, 1817 out of the Congress.

After his conference time he went to Cherry Valley again the work as a lawyer after. Between 1817 and 1821 he sat in the Senate from New York. He moved to Albany in 1822 and from there back to 1838 Cherry Valley. During this time he practiced as a lawyer, but devoted himself to literary work. In 1838 he was elected judge in Otsego County - a position which he held for five years. He then worked as County Superintendent of Schools. They called him on May 10, 1845 in the State Board of Regents, where he worked until his death. He died on 18 August 1855 in Cherry Valley, and was then buried in the same cemetery.
