Jack Burke (boxer)

John "Jack" Burke ( * 1874 or 1875; † February 14, 1942 in Plainfield, New Jersey ) was an American boxer. He played in his career against Andy Bowen the longest boxing match of all time.

About life Burkes are only sparse prior information. The long-running battle against his opponent by a title in the lightweight seems to have been the most memorable event of his boxing matches. It has obviously helped him to fame in the 1890s.

On the evening of April 6, 1893 entered for a prize of $ 2,500 Andy Bowen and John "Jack" Burke in "Olympic Club" of New Orleans for a competition. As the fight at 21:00 clock ( clock sources also speak of 21:15 or 21:30 clock ) began, no one suspected to witness a historic event. Burke should never have risen to the ring after this experience. He died at age 67 in Plainfield (New Jersey) to injuries he had apparently suffered in road traffic.
