Jack Washington

Ronald " Jack" Washington ( born July 17, 1910 in Kansas City, † November 28, 1964 in Oklahoma City ) was an American jazz saxophonist (baritone, alto) of swing.

Washington was with Harry Carney one of the first who used the baritone saxophone as a solo instrument. He started on the soprano saxophone, but moved as a student to the baritone. Right after high school, he played in 1926 at Bennie Moten, in which ( for example, with Jesse Stone and his Blues Serenaders ) until it remained to his death in 1935 by short interruptions, and from 1935 to 1950 in the Count Basie Orchestra ( from a brief period except in the U.S. Army ). After the dissolution of the Basie band, he moved to Oklahoma City and worked at the airport. He played only occasionally ( as on a Basie - reunion album, 1958).

There are shots with Moten, Basie, Harry James, Paul Quinichette and Billie Holiday.
