Jack Webb

Jack Webb ( born April 2, 1920 in Santa Monica, California as John Randolph Webb, † December 23, 1982 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American film director, screenwriter, actor and producer.

Life

Webb was known as a producer, director and actor of Lt. Friday in the U.S. crime series Police Report ( Dragnet ).

A child of the American Depression of the 1920s, Webb grew up with his mother. He suffered from asthma at a young age, but he was later as a heavy smoker (up to three packs a day) known. Although he was fascinated early on by the film and wanted to become a director, he worked first as a disc jockey at the radio. A small role in steps during the night of 1948 led to the idea of Dragnet. First aired as a radio drama on NBC, a television adaptation was produced, which was premiered in 1951 on television.

A trip to the movie business was not successful, so Webb, 1962 returned to television. Warner Bros. Television hired him in 1963 as production manager, but the failure of the series 77 Sunset Strip led to the dismissal after only 10 months. Two years of unemployment followed. Universal had acquired the rights to Dragnet and Webb contributed to spin a new season of the series, including a television film. The series was a great success, Webb's popularity grew more and more. This Webb showed his production company financially healthy legs. In the 1970s, he produced the medical drama Emergency!.

Jack Webb was married four times, inter alia, 1947 to 1953 with the actress and singer Julie London, and had 2 daughters. He died one day before Christmas Eve in 1982 of a heart attack.
