Jacob Auch

Even Jacob ( born February 22, 1765 in Echterdingen, † March 20, 1842 in Weimar ) was a German clockmaker, instrument builder and designer of calculating machines.

Life

Also, the son of a baker, was an apprentice at the famous instrument makers, watchmakers and pastor Philipp Matthäus Hahn in Echterdingen and worked in his workshop. In 1787 he started his own business with his own workshop in Vaihingen an der Enz. During this time he built instruments ( and restored works of art ) for the professor of physics and mathematics in Karlsruhe Johann Lorenz Boeckmann. In 1798 he was court watchmaker and supplier to the court of the Duke of Weimar. There he built instruments for the astronomer Franz Xaver von Zach on the Seeberg observatory. He also built a telescope and other equipment for Goethe.

He wrote two books on the art of watch -making.

He built next watches ( among other astronomical pocket watches modeled on tap) and calculating machines. In 1790 he built in Vaihingen adding machines, get two of which are ( Mathematics and Physics Salon in Dresden, Landesmuseum Wuerttemberg in Stuttgart). The machine in Stuttgart has eight hands and is designed for computing with cruisers and guilders. The machines are probably inspired by his time with Hahn, but follow a completely different design. A replica stands in the Arithmeum in Bonn.

In 1787 he married Eva Maria winter coat in Vaihingen.
