Jacob Boreel

Jacob Boreel ( born April 1, 1630 Amsterdam, † August 21 1697 in Velsen ) was a Dutch aristocrat, diplomat and statesman. He led the Knights title, Vrijheer of Duinbeek, Westhoven, St. Aecht and Meerestein.

Jacob Boreel came from the family of Boreels. His parents were of English peer Willem Boreel and Jacoba Carel ( 1607-1657 ). Boreel was in 1661 for the first time Schepen the city of Amsterdam. In 1665 he worked together with Nicolaes Witsen as ambassador in Moscow. In 1667 he married Isabella Coymans ( 1647-1705 ). This marriage came from Willem Boreel. As alderman of the city, he worked between 1668 and 1697. In 1678 and 1681 he was the Dutch ambassador in Paris. Boreel had been in contact by correspondence to Johan de Witt, Christian Huygens and Pieter de Graeff.

As an influential diplomat Boreel was sent to the peace treaties of the Republic of the Peace of Nijmegen. In 1680 he became councilor in the States-General. Between the years 1681 and 1681 Boreel was a member of the Amsterdam Vroedschap and Schout of the city. 1689 he was appointed one of the directors of the law firm of Suriname. His terms as mayor fell into the 1691, 1693, 1695 and in 1697. 1697 he was on the Dutch side in the peace of Ryswick present. Shortly before his death Boreel was again a Dutch Ambassador in Paris.
