Jacob Ettlinger
Jacob Ettlinger ( born March 17, 1798 in Karlsruhe, † December 7, 1871 in Altona ) was a Talmud scholar and strictly Orthodox rabbi who became a teacher of Samson Raphael Hirsch and Hildesheimer Esriel the pioneer of neo-orthodoxy. After his Talmudic commentary, he is also known as Aruch Laner (Hebrew ערוך לנר ).
Life
Jacob Ettlinger Jokew (Hebrew יעקב יוקב בן אהרן אטלינגר ) grew up ( 1769-1849 ) and his wife Rachel born in Karlsruhe Ettlinger, the son of Rabbi Aron Klaus Mayer Ettlinger. He became a student of the Baden Oberland Rabbi Asher Loew -Wallerstein and studied from 1816 to 1819 at the yeshiva in Würzburg under Abraham Bing, as well as parallel, as one of the first Jews at the local university. When his teacher Jacob Ettlinger Bing developed together with Isaac Bernays, the concept of " Torah derech eretz in " ( תורה עם דרך ארץ ), the compound of Toratreue and secular education.
Through his radical orthodoxy in contradiction to relevant senior councilor of the Israelites bathing Ettlinger was initially not in influential positions. From 1823 he was a rabbi at the pin Elias Wormser'schen study house in Karlsruhe, 1825, he was mayor at the Lemle - Moses - Klaus in Mannheim. In August of the same year married Jacob Ettlinger and Nanette " Gnendel " Worms ( 1809-42 ), the daughter of the Karlsruhe commune Kaufman Wormser.
In 1827 Rabbi Ettlinger District Rabbi in Ladenburg. After another confrontation with reform-minded colleagues, he took in 1836 to a position with the High German Israelite community to Altona and received the Office of the Chief Rabbi of Altona, Wandsbek and Schleswig-Holstein. His predecessor in this office, Israel Akiba Wertheimer, 1835 died. From Altona, where he held the office of Rabbinatsrichters (Av Bet Din ), he became very busy for Orthodoxy. So he led in 1844 to the protest of 144 rabbis against the decisions of a meeting reform-minded colleagues in Braunschweig. He founded a Talmudic college, a factory and Palestine in 1845, the first occurring against the reform efforts of Time Magazine: The Faithful Guardian of Zion: the institution to safeguard the interests of law-abiding Judaism, edited by Samuel Enoch.
Rabbi Ettlinger comment Aruch Laner (Eng. " Into the Light " is set ) over the six orders (Hebrew ש"ס, Shas ) now part of the Talmudic canon.
Seven children from the marriage went forward with Gnendel, who died in 1842. From the second marriage to Sophie ( Sheva ), born Mayer came from three other children.
Admor Jacob Ettlinger and Gnendel born Worms are buried in Hamburg- Altona in the cemetery King Street, Sophie Mayer born in the cemetery Bornkampsweg.
