Jacob Petros II Hovsepian

Hagop Bedros II Hovsepian, Jakob Peter II Hovsepian ( * ca 1689 in Aleppo, † 1753) was the second Patriarch of Cilicia of the Armenian Catholic Church.

Life

Hagop Hovsepian was first monk of the Armenian Apostolic Church. In 1720 he converted to the Armenian Catholic Church and was ordained by Bishop Abraham Ardzivian of Aleppo as a priest. Hovsepian accompanied Ardzivian in exile in Kreim (Lebanon). In 1635, he returned as deputy bishop Ardzivians back to Aleppo, 1638 could obtain a church for the catholic -minded Armenians in the city and 1639 obtain permission to return his bishop to Aleppo. 1740 ordained him in the meantime elected Patriarch of Cilicia Abraham Bedros I. Ardzivian bishop. Bedros I. was consecrated by Bishop Hovsepian, as well as two newly ordained priests also Patriarch of Cilicia. After that Hovsepian only able to hold some time in Aleppo and was active in the following years together with Patriarch Abraham Bedros I. Kreim.

After his death Hovsepian in 1749 was elected Patriarch. During his tenure, he built the monastery Bzommar and transferred the seat of the Armenian Catholic Patriarch of Cilicia in the foundation.
