Jacob Sturm

Jacob Sturm ( also Jacob Sturm, born March 21, 1771 in Nuremberg, † November 28, 1848 ) was a German engraver and naturalist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " storm".

Life

Storm learned the trade of engraver with his father Johann Georg Sturm. At the age of 16 years, he made ​​the acquaintance of the botanist Johann Christian von Schreber and entomologist Georg Wolfgang Franz Panzer. This inspired him to nature.

Storm dealt first with insects and published in the years 1791 and 1792 "Insect Cabinet, drawn from nature and engraved ". This edition contained no text. 1792 appeared fauna " Insectorum Germanicae initialized " with explanations of tanks.

Later, his work was "Germany's fauna illustrations from nature, with descriptions ", which includes 500 engravings, while his botanical work " Flora of Germany in illustrations from nature with descriptions " consists of 2,472 panels and contains texts.

On the basis of this flora was published 1900-1907, the well-known series " J. Storm 's Flora of Germany, " which issued the German Teachers Club of Natural History.

In recognition of his scientific work he was awarded the philosophical faculty of the University of Breslau in 1846 the title of a Ph.D. honoris causae. 1801 Storm co-founder of the Natural History Society of Nuremberg. Since 1846 he was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

Jacob Sturm had two sons, who supported him in later years in his work, both for the artist and ornithologist Johann Heinrich Christian Friedrich Sturm (1805-1862) and on the other the botanists, ornithologists and engraver Johann Wilhelm Sturm ( 1808-1865 ).
