Life

Jacob van Lennep was the son of David Jacob van Lennep, van Lennep of the family entstammend. He studied after visiting the Amsterdam Athenaeum in Leiden Law. He was Reich lawyer and conservative member of the Second Chamber. His literary career began with romantic narrative poems in imitation of Walter Scott. He tried to create a Dutch counterpart to his work in broad historical novels. His fluid style and skillfully landscaped plot guides are valuable narrative talent, but lacking in his texts the consistent elaboration of psychological depth moments. In addition to novels van Lennep also wrote dramas, farces, short stories and poems.
